Installing Updates
One of the most important jobs in keeping a pc running error free is to keep your operating system and hardware up to date with the latest updates and drivers. Don't forget your software programs may need updating too.

Windows Operating Systems
Security updates for Windows are essential as these are regulary released by Microsoft to close any loopholes which have been exploited by hackers and virus creators.

If you are using Windows XP make sure you have the automatic updates enabled, this can be found by clicking the:

Start Button > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Security Center

Click automatic updates and make sure that this is turned on.

Alternativly visit > http://update.microsoft.com/ at least every week or so

Application Software
Just as important really is keeping any software you have purchased up to date. Software patches are usually free and most can be set to automatically check for and download updates. Always worth checking to make sure you have these options switched on and let software updates complete to ensure the stability and security of your system and data.

Hardware Drivers
While drivers are important for many types of hardware, they are especially important for video cards. Graphic card companies are always updating drivers for their hardware and most of the time it is for better performance but at times there are errors in the code they use.
Often new computers or if you have just purchased a new graphics card will arrive and the drivers will be outdated, so always worth checking the makers website for any updates.

Internet Security

Firewalls
Most Internet routers include a firewall so make sure that this is enabled. In most cases this is used in conjuntion with Microsofts built in Firewall and will be good enough, although there are many that would argue this. There are many alternative firewall software out there some of which i say can be a little to over protective. Anyway its a compettive world out there so best to try a few and see what suits you. Anti-Virus Software
This is a must and again there are many software companies offering Anti Virus software and many Broadband providers include their own, which ever you decide to us its vital you keep it up to date. Most anti- virus software can be set to check for updates automatically when your computer is connected to the Internet. Select this option and allow updates to complete. Most anti virus scanners will check emails as well as files autamically but it is worth rinning this ar least once a week or anytime you feel unsure of your computers activity. Anti-Spyware Software
Again this is another must have as many seemingly innocent pieces of software, especially those downloaded from the internet contain "spyware". Much of this, while not in itself harmful to your computer, will use your computer's resources and slow it down. Often a major cause for slow computers! Many Anti-Spyware programs to choose from and I will say there are definatly some better at finding spyware than others. A few free ones can be found on our downloads page.
